Why is Islam growing so rapidly?
Islam is the fastest growing religion. According to Pew Research Centre, Muslims will grow more than twice as fast as the overall world population between 2015 and 2060 and, in the second half of this century, will likely surpass Christians as the world’s largest religious group.
While the world’s population is projected to grow 32% in the coming decades, the number of Muslims is expected to increase by 70% – from 1.8 billion in 2015 to nearly 3 billion in 2060.
Over the next four decades, Christians will remain the largest religious group, but Islam will grow faster than any other major religion. If current trends continue, by 2050 the number of Muslims will nearly equal the number of Christians around the world, and Muslims will make up 10% of the overall population in Europe.
The following are some observations on this phenomenon:
- “Islam is the fastest-growing religion in America, a guide and pillar of stability for many of our people...” (Hillary Rodham Clinton, Los Angeles Times).
- “Moslems are the world’s fastest-growing group...” (The Population Reference Bureau, USA Today).
- “....Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the country.” (Geraldine Baum; Newsday Religion Writer, Newsday).
- “Islam, the fastest-growing religion in the United States...” (Ari L. Goldman, New York Times).
Several factors are behind the faster projected growth among Muslims than non-Muslims worldwide. Firstly, Muslim populations generally tend to have higher fertility rates (more children per woman) than non-Muslim populations. In addition, a larger share of the Muslim population is in, or soon will enter, the prime reproductive years (ages 15-29). Also, improved health and economic conditions in Muslim-majority countries have led to greater-than-average declines in infant and child mortality rates, and life expectancy is rising even faster in Muslim-majority countries than in other less-developed countries.
In addition to fertility rates and age distributions, religious switching plays a key role in the growth of Islam. Since the beginning of the 21st century, a significant number of people (mostly from the US and Europe) have converted to Islam, and there are more converts to Islam than to any other religion. This phenomenon indicates that Islam is truly a religion from God. It is unreasonable to think that so many Americans and people from different countries have converted to Islam without careful consideration and deep contemplation before concluding that Islam is true.
